The Top 10 Mistakes People Make When They Have Curly Hair

Making sure your hair is healthy and happy is part of most people’s daily routines. However, if you have curly hair this job is extra important. Curly hair needs extra attention and love, and many people do more harm than good when it comes to taking care of their curly locks. Here are the 10 biggest mistakes that people with curly hair make.

  1. You brush your hair.

Cardinal sin number one if you have curly hair is putting a brush anywhere near your beautiful curls. Brushing your hair causes your curls to lose their shape and also creates frizz. It’s ok to detangle your hair once a month, but it’s preferable to use your fingers, in the shower to do this, not ever dry.

  1. You wash your hair every day.

Washing your hair everyday especially when it’s curly is a huge no-no. Curly hair tends to be drier than straight, so the oils your scalp produces take a while longer to actually get into the hair strands, which actually help protect and strengthen your hair. Over washing it can lead to drier, more brittle hair.

  1. You use a blow dryer on it.

If you blow dry your hair, use diffuser or else you will end up with a pile of frizz, not beautiful curls. And ditch the heat when you blow dry, as heat breaks down the keratin bonds in your hair, weakening it and make it prone to breaking.

  1. Using a towel to dry your hair.

Mistake number 4 is using a traditional towel to dry your hair. Terry towels can actually damage your curls, as well as create frizz. Enter the microfibre towel, which are extra absorbent and inherently gentler on hair. Not only that, microfibre towels also dry your hair faster, without creating any frizz. So, ditch that old terry towel.

  1. You skip deep conditioning it

Curls are naturally thirsty. Even though porosity does play a role in how much and how often your curls will need moisture, everyone with curls benefits from a deep conditioning treatment. Do it a minimum of once a week, and more often if your hair is extra dry.

  1. You sleep with wet hair.

Curls dry very strangely if you sleep with them wet and unprotected. If you shower in the evenings, use the plopping method, which has you tie your hair in a microfiber towel or t-shirt on top of your head. You will get less frizz and tons of extra definition for your curls.

  1. You use harsh styling products.

Just because you picked up the set of hair care products that says for curly hair does not mean that you are getting a quality product. Unfortunately, some of these products contain chemicals, like sulphates and parabens, which are bad for curly strands. They can lead to a host of issues, like dry scalp, irritation, dry strands and even cause hair breakage over time. Make sure you know what you are buying and ditch any products that are not free from sulphates and parabens pronto!

  1. Your pillow has a cotton pillowcase on it.

Curls don’t do well with tossing and turning on a rough, textured pillowcase. This will cause tangles and frizz. Using a silk pillowcase rids the worries of what a night of sleeping will do on your curly locks.

  1. You skip regular trims.

If your hair is your pride and joy, then getting regular trims is an essential part of good hair care. It keeps your curls looking healthy and helps prevent split ends which can lead to hair breakage and ruin your look.

  1. You don’t know your hair type.

Not all curly hair is the same. If you don’t know what your hair type is then you could be buying the completely wrong products and damaging your curls. It’s not just about your curl pattern, either. Knowing the porosity and density is important too.

These are the top 10 most common mistakes people make when taking care of their curly hair. Whether you have loose waves or tight curls, you are best avoiding these mistakes all together.
